Relaxed and Welcoming Stanville Lodge Hotel, Wexford

The Stanville Lodge Hotel The Stanville Lodge Hotel is a charming and friendly 3-star wedding venue in picturesque Wexford, just perfect for a fun and relaxed Irish wedding.

It's a family run hotel, which prides itself on looking after the little touches and personalising each wedding, so you can have that perfect day you've been dreaming of.

With the lovely Forth mountain in view, a bubbling fountain in front and the roaring fire in reception, wedding guests are in for a welcoming wow-factor start to your celebration.

Picture 071 The hotel can comfortably cater for up to 150 weddings guests in the elegant William Suite, with a private adjoining balcony overlooking the mountain. The room has a fantastic wooden beamed ceiling, which gives it a natural and cosy feel. The room can be decorated in a number of ways to personalise your colour scheme.

Smaller weddings will be conducted in the Cedar Suite Ceremony for up to 50 people for a civil ceremony.

Alternatively, if you're just going to have your reception at the Stanville, we highly recommend nearby Johnstown Castle for your ceremony. The two venues really complement each other.

The Honeymoon Suite at the Stanville The Honeymoon Suite is a great size with tasteful decorations and a separate lounge to relax in, with plenty of space for the bridal party to prepare on the morning of the wedding. It's also got an enormous bathroom with a huge shower, his and hers sinks, and separate jacuzzi tub.

The standard guest rooms are of a good quality and are very reasonably priced, perfect for large groups staying over for the wedding.

There's also a lot of activities to keep your wedding guests entertained in the local area, including water sports, horse-riding, golf, fishing and cycling. Famous local attractions include the Dunbrody Famine Ship, Hook Lighthouse, Wexford Wildfowl Reserve, Duncannon Fort and many more.

O'Nuaills Restaurant serves up great local and traditional fare, with some contemporary surprises thrown in. The bar is cosy and comfortable and the staff were more than happy to serve our Bailey's coffees in front of the crackling fire.

Bride in front of the fire at the Stanville Lodge Hotel, Wexford We actually couldn't resist doing a vow renewal in front of the fireplace as part of our Guinness World Record attempt for most married couple.

The whole experience of the Stanville Lodge Hotel is one of passion for service, extremely friendly and accommodating staff, and brilliant value for money. Perfect for Irish weddings of all sizes, and you're guaranteed a perfect wedding day for you and your guests.

Where To Eat in Kenmare, Ireland

We absolutely loved our trip to Kenmare, it's a picturesque town with beautiful people and natural landscapes. During our stay at the Kenmare Bay Hotel, we were delighted to be invited to try out two popular restaurants in town.

The Horseshoe

The HorseshoeThe award winning Horseshoe restaurant is a really romantic little restaurant with a fantastic bar in front and a really relaxed atmosphere. Candle lit, with interesting artwork and retro gates serving as dividers, it's exactly the perfect restaurant for date for two.

The food is excellent quality, really fresh and imaginative. We were determined not to eat any bread if we were offered it, until a perfectly baked and still warm mini loaf was put in front of us and all our resolve crumbled. OH MY GOD.

It's very vegetarian friendly, with at least two options per night. For starters, Mark had the local mussels, a fragrant bowl of goodness, and I had a lovely fresh salad. For the main course, I had the mushroom risotto, which was cooked inside a giant onion (it made me think of Shrek) and Mark had the Kenmare lamb, cooked to perfection.

The atmosphere in the Horseshoe is really romantic and it would be perfect for an intimate date, or just anyone who likes excellent food.

PF McCarthy's

PF McCarthy's For personality plus, great local beers, the best Irish entertainment, fantastic food and some quirky touches, you have to visit PF McCarthy's on main street.

We sat in the window seat in front of the fire, for some local Kenmare beer and a spot of lunch and got chatting with owner Paul about his travels around the world.

The food here is tops, with interesting Asian dishes like corn fritters and sweet chilli sauce, as well as traditional Irish and good pub grub. The falafel wrap wrap is to die for, and the fish and chips is perfect.

There's also some really great events at PFs, with traditional Irish nights, and the beer garden is really popular all year around, which has some cute decorations and their very own beer tree, an art installation with delicate tree leaves cut from beer cans.

You can also join the Beer Mug Club, which is one of the most brilliant ideas I've heard. For a small annual fee, you get your own specially engraved mug, locked inside a glass cabinet with your own key, plus a members T-shirt. Free lunch and a pint on your birthday, plus 3 free pints at Christmas and weekly discounts on pints. How cool is that?

Get Married at The Ferrycarrig Hotel, Wexford

Ferrycarrig Hotel, Wexford, Ireland

The Ferrycarrig Hotel in Wexford, a very popular wedding venue in Ireland, is built on the river Slaney and has one of the most spectacular views in Ireland.

We visited for four days to test out the Ferrycarrig's wedding potential and to meet the events team. It's a lovely and relaxing place to get married, with some great facilities, welcoming service and some cute and quirky touches that make it a really fun place for an Irish wedding.

The river Slaney comes right up to the hotel grounds and each window has a fantastic outlook. Complete panoramic water views are rare for hotels, making Ferrycarrig an extremely unique Irish wedding venue.

Wedding Ceremonies at the Ferrycarrig, Wexford Ireland The spacious reception room, the stylish Waterfront Suite seats up to 270 wedding guests and has a large private deck overlooking the gorgeous river. The room also has it's own private entrance, private bar and chill out lounge area for pre or post reception cocktails.

For smaller weddings of up to 60 people, the very stylish Reed Room is perfect for a more intimate soiree.

The stunning backdrop of the river creates beautiful and natural wedding photo opportunities, and there are picturesque nooks everywhere - from the deck garden, the outdoor back space and from the balcony of the honeymoon suite.

[Post continues after the video]

The hotel has 102 guest rooms, many with balconies, and perfect for large weddings or out of town guests. The honeymoon suite in particular has fantastic views, with two huge rooms, two bathrooms and some lovely luxury appointments, including a TV next to the jacuzzi.

The hotel has a wonderful and welcoming personality. There are so many unique touches, such as helium balloons on arrival, chocolate and marshmallow fondue and champagne for honeymooners, a petal and candle turn down service and some fun room service options such as a romantic movie package - complete with popcorn and ice-cream.

Ferrycarrig 104 We completed two renewals at the Ferrycarrig. Once on a treadmill (you'll have to watch the video to see!) and one on the deck on a beautiful late summer day.

We toasted our wedding luck with a Guinness in the bar and had some fabulous Irish food to celebrate.

Thank you to the team at the Ferrycarrig for taking such good care of us, organising such a unique vow renewal and for all the little touches which really made our stay fun.

The Wonderfully Welcoming Talbot Hotel Carlow

By Denise Duffield-Thomas

The Talbot Hotel, Carlow The Talbot Carlow Hotel in Ireland is a fantastic four-star wedding venue with a warm welcome, great facilitites and lots of surprising extras for the bride and groom. Just a little over an hours drive from Dublin, it's well worth a visit for your wedding venue short-list.

The hotel wasn't originally on our itinerary, but we were invited to speak at a Barnardo's event nearby and the hotel graciously offered to host us so we could inspect their wedding facilities.

I'm glad we did, because it's a great gem of a wedding venue.

Irish Wedding Onboard The Seafari

Kenmare Bay Wedding Renewal Our 9276th renewal (it seems that way sometimes) was a gorgeous and fun affair onboard the Seafari pleasure boat. We were serenaded, wined and dined and got to see the beautiful natural sights of the Kenmare Bay.

I wore a "Mad-Men" inspired part-vintage and original design wedding outfit, courtesy of Quack and Dirk, with a lovely fresh bridal bouquet from local florist, Kenmare Flowers.

The weather was perfect for the occasion. Just a small hint of a breeze and with a peek of sun hiding behind atmospheric clouds. Actually the right kind of weather for amazing photographs.

We were lucky that the renewal was performed by Kerry County Councillor, former Mayor of Kerry and national celebrity, Michael Healy Rae, winner of Ireland's version of "I'm a Celebrity, Get Me Out of Here!". He's a well known character with a great sense of humour, known as well as being part of a very famous political family.

The Kenmare Bay Hotel Set in the gorgeous town of Kenmare in the natural surroundings of Co. Kerry, the Kenmare Bay Hotel is a picturesque and relaxed Irish wedding venue, with a few unique surprises up its sleeve.

We spent two nights at the Kenmare Bay, and believe me, the hotel fit a LOT into our stay. Sue, Andrew and the team showed us exactly how they treat wedding couples with all of the beautiful touches, such as fresh flowers, champagne and chocolates on arrival and brilliant personalised service.

Four Renewals in One Day in County Clare

During our trip to the Falls Hotel and Spa, the team got really excited about our Guinness World Record attempt and helped us along with four renewals... all in one day.

It was a great way to see some of the beautiful sights of Clare, do some interesting renewals, relax and pretend to be tourists - all at the same time!

Incredible falls

Falls Hotel and Spa wedding. Photographs by John Kelly Falling in love again. Photographs by John Kelly

The Falls Hotel is named, not surprisingly for the incredible river that runs just outside their front door and along the hotel. It looks like we've been photoshopped into the Niagra Falls, but this is a wedding shot that any couple can recreate with a two minute walk from the hotel. Read our hotel review here.

Our ceremony was performed by deputy manager John McCarthy, one of the family members who own and run the hotel. He did a great job, despite standing right on the edge! The water rushing by sounded incredible, and we really felt the power of nature blessing our ceremony!

Doolin Cave

Doolin Cave

Imagine following a stream to see where it came from and finding yourself tunnelling through Ireland's famed burren country. In 1952, the great stalactite was discovered and today is a family-run eco tourist attraction.

Caving is not really my idea of a good time, and when you hear that it took 14 months to create the attraction for the public, I'm just glad that other people like to do it, and people like me can just reap the rewards.

It's a very interesting experience, and the tour guide was absolutely fantastic. The descent down into the caves is via staircase, and it feels safe at all times. You follow the trickling stream through large tunnelled walkways and marvel at the power of water to create such an unbelievable sight.

The stalactite hangs in the final chamber and is dramatically lit for full effect. It's a beautiful thing to behold, created from millions of drips of water, weighing more than ten tonnes and hanging improbably from the ceiling of a giant cathedral-like cave.

Of course, we couldn't resist a vow renewal, beautifully performed by Paddy and underneath the great stalactite itself.

Talking of records - the stalactite is the largest in the northern hemisphere, second largest in the world, but it's the largest on-display free hanging stalactite anywhere in the world!

The Doolin Cave is a brilliant tourist attraction and a must-see when you're passing through Clare. There's also more to explore. A second chamber is slowly being excavated and is likely to unearth some more incredible sights, so stay tuned. Tours take approximately one hour. More information here.

The Matchmaker Bar, Lisdoonvarna

Matchmaker Willie Daly

Every September, singles congregate at the pretty town of Lisdoonvarna for Europe's biggest matchmaker festival!

The festival started as a way for bachelor farmers to find a wife, but now is an excuse for singles to come and have a great time, drinking and dancing. If they find a match, even better!

Matchmaking is an age-old profession, and they don't come any more passionate than Willie Daly, a third generation matchmaker no less, who carries around details of his clients in his great-grandfather’s lucky matchmaking book.

The Matchmaker Bar, LisdoonvarnaHe speaks movingly about love and takes his job very seriously. His knack of finding perfect matches is partly based on getting to know each client's preferences, and partly based on intuition. He got us to fill in a matchmaking form, just to check our compatibility!

Our wedding ceremony was held in front of the Matchmaker Bar, performed by the Matchmaker himself and was a beautifully personal renewal. Willy believes in love, and he has a wonderful calm energy about him. He genuinely loves his profession and has thousands of matches under his belt, including now The Honeymoon Testers!

The Cliffs of Moher

The Cliffs of Moher on a sunny day The Cliffs of Moher are one of the most famous and iconic natural landmarks in Ireland. The breathtaking cliffs range for 8 kilometres over the western coast of County Clare and tower 200 metres above the ocean.

Our ceremony was performed at the base of O'Brian's Tower, the romantic fort-type viewing tower which stands near the highest point of the Cliffs, and gives views of the Aran Islands, Galway Bay, The Twelve Pins, the Maum Turk Mountains in Connemara and Loop Head to the South. The Tower was built in 1835 and celebrates 175 years this year.

The team put together a beautiful wedding spread for us, including champagne, cupcake wedding cake, strawberries and two cute cuddly sheep. An Irish flag completed the look!

Unfortunately the weather was incredibly foggy, so instead of the stunning cliffs in the background, we took a fake photo inside at the state of the art visitors centre.

The Fake Cliffs of Moher O'Brian's Tower at the Cliffs of Moher

The Cliffs of Moher are Ireland’s nomination for the global online campaign to find the New 7 Wonders of Nature in 2011. Vote and get behind this beautiful wonder.

It's our second wedding at the Cliffs of Moher! Our first was during a Paddy Wagon Tour of the Ring of Kerry!

What a day! Married four times!

On the Cliffs of Moher Cruise, seeing it from a different angle What a lovely way to see the gorgeous sights of Clare!

Thanks to Joanne at the Falls Hotel and Spa for arranging this fabulous day and hosting us at the gorgeous hotel for two days. Joanne was a champ, she had to climb, hike, duck and dive to take pictures for us.

She even took us on a sightseeing boat cruise (where we could wear normal clothes and NOT get married for a change) on the Cliffs of Moher Cruises to see the incredible view from a different angle.

It was a great trip being out on the water and seeing the birds and their sanctuary up close. The rocks and natural formations have even been used as part of the Harry Potter sets. Unfortunately, Mark is not in the photo, as he turned an unpleasant shade of green and had to stay inside!

Cheers again to Doolin Caves, the team at the Cliffs of Moher and Willie Daly for helping us achieve our goal of 100 wedding vow renewals.

Falls Hotel and Spa

Falls Hotel and Spa The Falls Hotel and Spa in County Clare is a friendly and traditional family-run hotel with incredible views, fantastic food and a great place for spirited Irish weddings. Owned by the current family for almost 25 years, it has a varied and interesting history dating back to 1712.

Set by an incredible tumbling river and with beautiful wooded grounds, it's an impressive mix of an eighteenth century mansion, a late medieval castle, a Georgian-style house and modern hotel which even sports an eco-style hydroelectric plant. All of the varied parts come together in a blend of welcoming hospitality.

Silver Tassie Hotel and Spa

Review by Denise Duffield-Thomas
Video by Mark Duffield-Thomas

Weddings at the Silver Tassie Hotel For a relaxed and friendly wedding venue with style and class, not to mention unbelievable facilities for wedding couples, look no further than the Silver Tassie Hotel in Letterkenny Co. Donegal.

The Honeymoon Testers spent two lovely days at the Silver Tassie and we were really impressed, particularly with the unique spa, wedding reception room and the well-decorated hotel.

Weddings at the Silver Tassie

Silver Tassie Woodland Suite Wedding Reception Room Wedding receptions are very popular at the Silver Tassie, for locals and visitors alike. The hotel is so beautifully decorated inside, and has a wonderfully large reception room.

They have 36 ensuite guest rooms plus the honeymoon suite. The honeymoon suite is a large, beautifully decorated room with some really unique and lovely touches. Scattered on the bed was a love heart made in white petals surrounded by chocolates, and we were surprised with a gift bag of Voya seaweed products. However, my absolute favourite (and I've not seen this anywhere else) were little love notes around the room. We kept on finding them - in the bathroom, near our pillows and behind lamps. It's a thoughtful and romantic touch!

Of course you can get married at the Silver Tassie if you're not doing a church wedding, and couples can opt for a civil ceremony in one of the beautifully decorated wedding rooms, complete with red carpet, personalised decorations and romantic drapery. We loved it so much, we had our 54th wedding renewal there!

Civil ceremony at the Silver Tassie, Letterkenny Co. Donegal

Reception Dinners

Wedding Cake at the Silver Tassie Big weddings are common in this part of Donegal, it's not unusual for a wedding of 250 people or more! The Silver Tassie can accommodate in their recently renovated Woodlands Suite, a bright and airy room, carpeted with a beautiful polished dance floor and lit by glamorous chandeliers. With a private lobby and a dedicated bar, there's plenty of space for a fabulous wedding. It's really got the wow factor.

For smaller groups, there are the beautiful private dining rooms, lovingly decorated with pretty wallpaper and interesting art-work. There's a fire for chilly days, rustic exposed brick and quality touches everywhere.

There's a great range of delicious food on offer, from traditional Irish to special themed nights. The chef was more than happy to tailor the menu for me, and can cater for all sorts of dietary requirements. Staff are unbelievably flexible, and they like to pride themselves on their relaxed manner - they want you to feel at home.

Beauty

There is a beautician and hairdresser on site, which is extremely convenient for brides. Rather than an outside hair stylist trying to cope in your hotel room, you and the bridal team can get primped in the professional hair salon by Terence and his team at Atomic Hair Design. They did a fantastic job for me, I was thrilled and it's very rare to find a hotel who can provide this kind of on-site service for brides in an actual hair salon.

The make-up service on offer at the Seascape Spa (more on that in a second), uses the Bare Minerals brand of make-up, which is very good for your skin, is perfect for weddings because it lasts all day but creates a fresh and dewy look. Having a brilliant make-up artist on site is a wonderful service for brides, and I definitely recommend the result myself. My skin actually feels amazing days later.

[Post continues after video]

Seascape Spa

The spa is only one year old, and we were there to celebrate the anniversary! Everything still looks brand spanking new and is decorated in a beautiful, fresh and sea-inspired colour scheme.

We've been to a lot of spas around the world, and it's rare to find one decorated in such a bright and cheerful way. It really makes you feel like you're on a sunny vacation. All of the facilities are world class, and everything down to the towels is beautifully done.

Seascape Spa, Letterkenny, Co. Donegal

Isn't it nice ladies to have a flattering fluffy robe? Most spas have giant, shapeless ones, and of course you don't have to look nice at a spa, but it makes a huge difference to how you feel.

The seascape spa has brilliant treatments for brides-to-be, hen parties, couples and yes, even men! Facials, massages and the wonderful seaweed bath! It sounds strange, but seaweed is amazing for your skin and hair. It's a ...different sensation, but not an unpleasant one and you feel incredible afterwards. Just for fun, we HAD to do a wedding renewal in the bath!

The treatment rooms are calm and relaxing, particularly the couples room. Two gorgeous leather massage beds, a giant tub, candles and a shower give a couple the space and privacy to have a rejuvenating treat together. This is particularly important before the wedding, when the stress can really get you down and you almost forget why you're doing the whole thing. Take this time to reconnect and relax at the same time.

Our wedding at the Silver Tassie As most of you know, we were only married a year ago, so it's very fresh in our minds what a couple want and need for their wedding, and believe us - these guys know what they are doing!

The Silver Tassie was definitely a delight to visit. Staff in all areas of the hotel are extremely friendly and welcoming, it's a gorgeous place to welcome your wedding guests and the actual wedding itself will be spectacular in such a lovely setting.

Thank you to Tracy and the whole team at the Silver Tassie for showing us a great time. You really went above and beyond to help us experience what you do for "real" brides and grooms, and you really impressed us with your talent for authentic hospitality.

Runaway Bride and Groom can help you put together an incredible package at the Silver Tassie Hotel, including flowers, photographer and much more. Find out more...

Above and Beyond Welcome at the Celtic Ross Hotel

Celtic Ross HotelWe had been travelling for 5 hours straight, so driving around the corner and finally seeing the Celtic Ross hotel lit up against the shimmering Rosscarbery Bay was a welcome sight.

Helen Wycherley, owner of the hotel is passionate about providing a special experience for her guests, and is proud that her hotel has a reputation for being one of the best in West Cork.

From our very first arrival into reception, we were greeted by Angela who made us feel extremely welcome, quickly organised our laundry for us and really put a smile on our faces after such a long drive.
