Mark and Denise Duffield-Thomas are the first winners of the Ultimate Job competition and were unanimously voted by the judges in a heated final with 9 other couples. 

Denise is an Australian who has lived in London for over 8 years. She has a background in performance, entrepreneurship, speaking and writing. She has a degree in Marketing and is currently training to be a Law of Attraction life coach. 

Her most recent position was in New Media, project managing social media and the online presence for one of the UK's largest charities as well as running several online businesses. 

Denise is passionate about personal development, is an ardent student of the LoA and continues to challenge herself and others to live amazing and audacious lives out of the ordinary.

Mark is English, has a degree in Management from Manchester Business School and spent 5 years in marketing and strategy in London. His most recent corporate experience was as Sales Operations Manager working in sponsorship sales for world famous soccer club Manchester United. 

Mark is passionate about creating a life where he and Denise can travel the world, make lots of money, follow soccer, do yoga, eat well and eventually start a family. Mark is also a qualified football coach and holds a diploma in Marketing (CIMA).

This weekend in Kinsale Co Cork we met our 10 finalist couples. We had set them challenges approaching the weekend and a detailed application form.

Over the weekend they were all interviewed by a travel agent, PR consultant, Wedding planner and a journalist. And they were set tasks, some fun, some not so fun.

The standard of work from each applicant for The Ultimate Job was exceptional. All excelled in different areas; For video production in particular; Kerri and Matt, Brendan and Mel, Dave and Dani and Tim and Lauren. For writing Dee and Rory, Tara and Mark, David and Nina Cait. Allan and Niamh and Lizzie and Ed stood out from the crowd for their ability to take up a new challenge ie. Videoing for the first time at such a level, running with it and being the type of wonderful personalities that we could manage from a distance.

So why did Mark and Denise stand out from the crowd in the end?

Writing skills: Denise has been writing about wedding issues online for over a year through her website http://www.rawbrides.com. She understands the ins and outs of planning a wedding abroad as herself and Mark got married twice last year once in UK and once in Australia! She has written and developed eBooks and materials to sell online which shows innovation and creativity. Mark wrote a similar guide for grooms. So they can write and they understand our industry inside out.

Vlogging: They too just started vlogging for the first time when they heard about the UJ. Their initial application was produced on a cell phone. We have always said we were not looking for Oscar winning performances – we wanted a couple that could go to a location and report back in a way other couples could relate to, all the couples have proved they can do this and yes the standards of the videos submitted excelled Mark’s and Denise’s in some cases, but with some more practice and training Mark and Denise will develop their style and we feel they will have mass market appeal. We feel they have already come a long way in a matter of weeks.

Deadlines and Challenges: Denise and Mark met all challenges with a sense of humour and made it all seem effortless. They were one of three couples who met the 3pm deadline for the weekend video challenges. Yes, others did encounter tech difficulties and we allowed for that but still in the overall scheme of things, they will possibly be working in countries with weak broadband, etc. and will still need to meet deadlines.

Even the fun Challenges: They were first to have their reaction video up when they received the news of making the top 10.

They rallied endorsement support from authors and businesses they admired and got it.

They used their logic to work out that the location of the RTE radio interview on Saturday had to be between the two hotels we had divided the group and so were first to the post. They then did an impressive radio interview.

Social Media Skills: We have emphasised all along that the successful couple will be required to regularly participate in Social media to develop our brand. Denise’s current job is developing social media for a major UK charity and has been developing her skills in this area through her own Raw Brides project, so she understands what and how it works.  Denise was a regular bloggers, Facebooker and twitterer.

Good Team Work: Living in each others pockets for 6 months 24/7 is not always going to be easy and Denise and Mark are a dynamic team which can deal with that challenge. They always came across whether face to face, on video or on air as very natural, at ease within themselves and with each other and the type of couple that we could manage long distance with ease and get the results we want. We knew that no matter where we send them or ‘challenges’ they face during the next 6 months they will handle themselves professionally and represent Runaway Bride and Groom in a manner that we will be proud off.  We were all taken aback by the professional way they gave their acceptance speech and it just confirmed to us we made the right choice.  The following morning Denise and Mark were in the breakfast room writing lengthy thank you notes (on personalised paper which they had left over from their wedding) to all the sponsors in Kinsale, the coach driver, and everyone else who made the weekend so wonderful – only something small, but when representing a company like ours, manners and attention to detail count a lot. Maybe others would have done the same had it been them, but still it just showed us that Denise and Mark were the right cut and had clicked into the Runaway Bride and Groom ambassador role with ease.

They gave a fantastic interview and they have the maturity to be able to handle the ups and downs this job will bring, such as negative comments. We had brought the point up of negative comments with all the finalist couples, as we knew it would happen no matter who was successful and they will continue we’re sure from time to time as that is the world of social media.

However, it is not all doom and gloom for the other couples – we are a very young company and things are developing at great speed for us so we hope that there will be exciting opportunities we can approach the other finalists with in the future, similar to the way the Queensland Best Job did with their finalists.
